Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration

On behalf of the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee I would like to invite you to attend the annual Commemoration to mark the 179th Anniversary of the execution of the two indigenous freedom fighters Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner. These two men were executed in Melbourne for having the audacity to resist the British colonisation of their lands and the destruction of their people and their way of life.

The Commemoration will be held at 12:00pm on Wednesday 20th January 2021 at the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Memorial – corner of Victoria St and Franklin St, Melbourne – the site they were executed 179 years ago.

The monument to Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner is the first major monument to the frontier wars built anywhere in Australia. We need to acknowledge the past to understand the present and change the future. Until Australians and their governments recognise the brutality of the past, reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians will never occur.

Since 2004, the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee has been holding a ceremony at the execution site on 20th January to mark the execution.

Look forward to seeing you on the 20th January.
All the best for the new year,
Dr. Joseph Toscano / Convenor Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee
