People

Dr. Joe Toscano, Inaugural Public Officer (Australia)

Joe Toscano, a graduate in medicine and surgery (Bachelors, University of Queensland and Doctoral degree, University of Melbourne) established Libertarian Workers for a Self-Managed Society in 1977, along with the radio show, Anarchist World on 3CR. He helped organise the Australian Anarchist Centenary Celebrations in 1986, editing the proceedings "Anarchy is Order, Government is Chaos".

Dr. Toscano has led several campaigns in recent years. These include the removal of skulls from the Old Melbourne Gaol which were used for a phrenology exhibition, which occurred, the formation of Friends of Our ABC, an annual commemeration of the Eureka Stockade, and the initiating the Defend and Extend Medicare campaign, which attracted the condemnation of the Minister for Health and resulted on an internal report being compiled by "a senior intelligence official".

Joe has also been an independent candidate for public office on several occasions, despite not being enrolled to vote.

Lev Lafayette, Convenor, Melbourne branch (Australia)

Lev Lafayette has degrees in politics, philosophy, sociology, business administration, project management, and adult and tertiary education. A long-term member of the Australian Labor Party, Lev was the policy convener for the Labor-Left Pledge Unions faction in Victoria from 1998 to 2002, and organised the Labor Left conference in 2000, and founder of Labor for Refugees in 2001. In the mid to late 1980s he was a member of the Democratic Socialist Party, now part of Socialist Alliance.

Paula Di Angelis, Convenor, Adelaide branch (Australia)

Paula Di Angelis comes from a family of progressive social and union activists, is an honours graduate in history, and is a doctoral candidate in working-class oral history.
